Role PurposeThe Junior School EAL Teacher plays a key role in supporting students for whom English is an Additional Language to access the curriculum fully and make strong academic and personal progress. The post holder will deliver high-quality EAL teaching, support inclusive classroom practice and work collaboratively with academic staff and the Head of Inclusion to ensure that all learners are valued, supported and challenged appropriately.Uppingham School, Hung Yen is a diverse international school in Vietnam, serving learners from a range of linguistic, cultural and educational backgrounds. The role requires flexibility, cultural sensitivity and a commitment to inclusive international education.Key Responsibilities1. EAL Teaching and LearningPlan, deliver and assess effective EAL lessons for Junior School students, using a range of appropriate teaching strategies to support language development.Provide targeted EAL support through a combination of:Small‑group withdrawal sessionsIn‑class support and co‑teachingDifferentiated language scaffolding.Assess students’ English language proficiency using appropriate assessments and maintain accurate records of progress.Develop and maintain individual EAL learner profiles, including next steps, targets and recommended classroom strategies.Support students’ academic language development across listening, speaking, reading and writing.Promote consistent use of English as the shared language of learning, while valuing students’ home languages and backgrounds.2. Inclusive Education and Student SupportContribute actively to the school’s inclusive education provision, ensuring EAL learners can access the curriculum alongside their peers.Work closely with the Head of Inclusion to support students with overlapping needs (e.g. EAL learners with SEND or learning differences).Support students’ social integration, confidence and wellbeing within an international and multicultural school community.Promote equality of opportunity and respect for diversity in all aspects of school life.3. Collaboration and Professional PracticeWork collaboratively with Junior School teachers to plan learning that meets the linguistic and academic needs of EAL learners.Communicate regularly with academic staff regarding student progress, strategies and classroom support.Participate in relevant meetings, including inclusion, pastoral and academic discussions.Support EAL-related professional development for staff where appropriate.Contribute to transition processes, including admissions screening or transition between year groups where required.4. Whole‑School EAL SupportSupport the development of consistent EAL practice across the Junior School.Work with teachers to share strategies that support EAL learners in mainstream classrooms.Advise on planning, differentiation and language scaffolding for EAL learners.Collaborate with the Head of Inclusion to promote inclusive, language‑aware teaching.Contribute to a shared responsibility for EAL provision across the school.5. Assessment, Monitoring and ReportingMaintain accurate assessment records and contribute to school tracking systems.Provide written and verbal feedback on students’ progress to parents, class teachers and school leaders.Support parent communication regarding EAL provision and student progress, working sensitively with families from diverse backgrounds.6. Wider School ResponsibilitiesActively support the vision, ethos and values of Uppingham Hung Yen.Contribute positively to wider school life, including events, enrichment activities and school initiatives as appropriate.Engage fully in the school’s professional learning and appraisal processes.Uphold high standards of professionalism, safeguarding and child protection at all times.Undertake other reasonable duties as directed by the Head of Junior School.Person SpecificationEssential QualificationsBachelor’s degree (education‑related preferred).Recognised teaching qualification (e.g. PGCE, QTS, or international equivalent).EAL/ESL qualification (e.g. TEFL, TESOL, CELTA, DELTA) or strong evidence
