An experienced, energetic and broadly able American Tutor is required to fill a full-time homeschooling role based in several locations including Florida and Connecticut. A high level of writing ability is required. It is anticipated that the role is likely to continue until the student completes her high school education. This assignment is the start of a long-term homeschooling role that aims to provide mentorship and inspire a love of academia in the student and to provide flexibility for her to travel and proceed with her education alongside her athletic pursuits.StudentThe student is a sophomore (rising junior in Fall 2026) enrolled in an accredited online high school, where she has maintained an A average across an all-honors curriculum. In her sophomore year she is taking two AP courses, and she anticipates a demanding honors and AP program through junior and senior year, including multiple AP Calculus courses. She is a competitive showjumper who trains and competes at a high level, based primarily in Florida for much of the school year (November through April). In the remainder of the year she is either based in Connecticut or travelling to competitions (including internationally). Online schooling was chosen specifically to accommodate this lifestyle, and it has served her well academically. The role of a full-time tutor is to help her continue to excel in a rigorous curriculum while managing the pressures of elite sport — time, energy, focus, and the mental demands that come with competing at that level. In addition, a master’s-level writing ability is desired. She engages most readily through conversation and direct explanation rather than textbooks or dense written material. Face-to-face and verbal instruction is where she absorbs ideas most effectively. Video formats are also useful. Developing strategies to work through complex readings more efficiently will be an important part of her academic preparation, particularly as AP coursework increases in volume and density. She has a strong aptitude for mathematics and science. In problem-solving, she often finds her own route to an answer, but she benefits from being shown why systematic methods are more reliable across different problem types. She responds to demonstration rather than explanation alone. One area of focus will be building her ability to see the broader structure of a subject, not just solve individual problems in isolation. Her humanities work has room to grow, particularly analytical writing. Logical structure and argumentative flow in essays need development. She responds well to Socratic discussion as a way of working through ideas, and this approach should be central to humanities instruction.Online school provides weekly rather than daily deadlines, which require strong self-management. It is important to help her build effective task-flow habits — breaking work into manageable steps, avoiding last-minute preparation, and maintaining consistent momentum alongside her training schedule. She works well once she is engaged with a task; the challenge is in the structure and initiation of work, not in the work itself. Scheduling needs to flex around training, competitions, and travel. She holds herself accountable to adults she respects, and she
