This thriving department enjoys first-class accommodation and facilities. In 2014 the Stephen Martin Music School was opened by John Rutter with a large rehearsal/chamber concert room named after him, a recording studio, band room, percussion suite, seven practice/instrumental teaching rooms, a large classroom with keyboards and a music technology classroom with 26 PCs and full-size keyboards. In addition there are plenty of lockers, storage, a music ‘library’ and an office. Hymers pupils perform in many concerts, festivals and competitions: in school, locally and nationally. The Junior School Choirs have regularly reached the finals of Barnardo’s Competition and have been invited to sing at the Llangollen Festival in recent years. Music For Youth is another highlight of our calendar with both local and national performances. Popular music has also developed alongside the more traditional styles and our groups are starting to entertain and compete locally. In recent years students and staff have produced a number of musicals that have been of outstanding quality. In addition to the full-time staff, there are 9 instrumental teachers (VMTS) who deliver around 160 vocal and instrumental lessons a week. They also lead and support ensembles in rehearsals and concerts. We have an ABRSM special visit each term when pupils can enjoy performing in familiar surroundings. The Music Department also makes important contributions to a number of very high profile events such as the annual Speech Day and Remembrance Day Services and the annual Charity Carol Concert.
